Men vs. Women in Car Insurance Rates
By Stuart Simpson
Why do men usually pay more for car insurance? Do women really get
that big of a discount? What is the deal? In a word: statistics.
Young men tend to drive faster, not wear seatbelts, drive more,
reckless driving, and possibly dui’s. What can you do about it?
Nothing. But I can help you understand why.
Typically, young male drivers ages 16 to 25 have to pay more for car
insurance than for females of the same age, driving the same car,
for the same coverage. It’s statistics. I’m getting tired of that
word already, but there is a true gender bias that makes men pay
more money for insurance.
Men drive more – why? Maybe driving their dates? Women typically
don’t drive their dates. What about teenage daredevil driving
actions? Its called reckless driving and sometimes fun, it sometimes
ends up in an accident. Accidents mean less money for the insurance
company.
Are men dumber? Longer learning curve? Are they just not paying
attention like the females? We may never know the truth. I’m no
psychologist and couldn’t begin to give you a straight answer.
I can give you good news. When a male driver turns 25, then the
insurance rates go down. As you get older, maybe you gain more
experience. Maybe the statistics change. Of course they do or the
rates wouldn’t drop.
Also, if you get married, your rates will drop to the floor. Again,
statistics say married men are calmer and drive more carefully. I
think its due to them not chasing women all the time.
But will the women catch up? There are more female drivers than
there were 40 years ago. Their accidents are statistically on the
rise. I would hate for them to have to pay the higher rates and I
know they won’t as the insurance company will only rely on
statistics and as they change, hopefully, so will the insurance
rates.
